University Archive of the TU Chemnitz

The University Archive has been a department of the University Library since 2014 and is primarily responsible for the preservation of documents created throughout the Technical University. Since 2020, it has been housed in the renovated Alte Aktienspinnerei.

The archive was founded as an institution in 1956. However, the records date back to the founding phase of the Royal Industrial College Chemnitz, including the affiliated schools such as the Royal School of Building Trades, the Royal School of Master Craftsmen and the School of Drawing, from 1836 onwards.

In addition to the holdings of Chemnitz University of Technology and its immediate predecessors, the archive also holds the holdings of dissolved engineering schools from Karl-Marx-Stadt as well as educational institutions from Karl-Marx-Stadt, Zwickau, Auerbach and Rochlitz.

In addition, the archive currently holds more than 100 bequests and bequests as well as smaller collections of study notes. There is also an extensive collection of items, including around 150,000 photographic motifs.

There are currently around 3.6 kilometres of documents stored in the University Archive's stacks.
