As at 30 June 2026, 250,497 people had their main residence in Chemnitz. That was 356 fewer than a year earlier. Including those with a second home, Chemnitz had a population of 253,224 on that date.
The average age has risen slightly further. At the end of June 2026, it stood at 46.23 years. At the end of 2025, it had been 46.18 years, and at the end of 2024 it stood at 46.09 years.
Of those residents with their main residence in the city, 212,297 held German citizenship. 38,200 residents were foreign nationals.
Between July 2025 and June 2026, 12,397 people moved to Chemnitz, whilst 10,736 left the city. Chemnitz thus recorded a net migration gain of 1,661 people. This figure does not include arrivals at and departures from the Chemnitz initial reception centre.
At the same time, the number of births remained significantly lower than the number of deaths. From June 2025 to May 2026, 1,534 births and 3,557 deaths were recorded. This results in a natural population change of minus 2,023 inhabitants.
The ongoing population decline is thus still largely driven by the low birth rate relative to the number of deaths. Net migration has so far been able to mitigate this trend, but not to offset it.
