On Friday 10 July, the ban on alcohol consumption on Thomas-Mann-Platz will come into force, the day after the public announcement of the relevant police by-law in the Chemnitz Official Gazette (Issue 28/2026).
This was decided by Chemnitz City Council at its meeting on 27 May with the aim of better protecting children and young people from alcohol-related risks in public spaces.
The ban covers the area of Thomas-Mann-Platz, including the adjacent green space between August-Bebel-Straße 17 and Thomas-Mann-Platz 2a.
In future, it will be prohibited to consume alcoholic drinks or carry them for consumption in this area from 9 am to 9 pm, Monday to Saturday. Authorised outdoor dining areas are exempt from this rule.
Violations will be treated as an administrative offence and punished with a fine of at least 5 euros and up to 5,000 euros (negligent violations with a maximum fine of 2,500 euros).
