For the first time, parents can use a digital process to enrol their children starting school for the 2027/2028 academic year. Online enrolment is available from 1 August to 15 September 2026 via www.chemnitz.de/digitale-grundschulanmeldung.
The digital process is provided by the Saxon State Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs. It is aimed at parents whose children were born between 1 July 2020 and 30 June 2021 and who will therefore be of school age for the 2027/2028 school year.
Use of the service is subject to certain conditions. Among other things, both parents and the child must be resident in Saxony. Furthermore, the child’s registered address must match the registered address of at least one parent. Digital enrolment is only possible for the relevant state primary school.
During the online enrolment process, the relevant school catchment area is automatically determined based on the home address. In shared school catchment areas, the preferred primary school can be selected from a list. A second and third choice of school may also be specified.
Digital primary school enrolment only replaces the enrolment process itself. For the subsequent admission procedure, personal contact with the school is generally still required.
The in-person enrolment dates at Chemnitz’s primary schools remain in place. Parents can also enrol their child on Thursday 20 August and Tuesday 25 August 2026, between 2 pm and 6 pm on each day, at their preferred local primary school within the relevant school catchment area.
Parents can therefore choose between in-person enrolment and – provided the requirements are met – digital enrolment.
