The reopening takes place on the nationwide Day of Astronomy. From 5 p.m., interested visitors can marvel at the (night) sky (weather permitting) through telescopes in front of the planetarium and in the observatory. The programme also includes five planetarium shows for different age groups - from space travel suitable for children to scientific topics such as planetary research and dark matter.
Chemnitz kindergartens and schools can then book dates again, including for the current school term. Bookings can be made on the newly designed website www.planetarium-chemnitz.de. The aim is to integrate the planetarium into lesson planning as usual with permanent staff.
Until now, the city of Chemnitz and the Free State of Saxony have shared the operation of the school planetarium. The city provides the building and equipment, while the Free State provides the teaching staff. In recent years, it has hardly been possible to meet the demand for teaching staff due to a shortage of specialists, meaning that school visits were often not possible.
In May 2025, the city council instructed the administration to ensure that the Chemnitz School Planetarium and its services are maintained at the current location despite the shortage of teaching staff. The city council also explicitly allocated funds for the 2025 and 2026 budget years to maintain teaching operations at the planetarium. The school planetarium will continue to be open regularly for kindergartens and schools. Public programmes are only planned in exceptional cases.
