When the indoor swimming pool is closed

The annual summer closures of indoor swimming pools ensure safe and trouble-free operation on all other days of the year. This is because much of the maintenance work can only be carried out when the pool is drained and the equipment is switched off.

All indoor swimming pools in Chemnitz are currently closed. They are currently undergoing maintenance and repairs to ensure that safety,
hygiene and technical systems are guaranteed for the coming season. One of the most important tasks is the complete draining of the swimming pools. Only then can the pool floors and walls be thoroughly cleaned, the grouting replaced and any damaged tiles or screed surfaces repaired. Technical systems such as water circulation systems and filter systems can also only be inspected in an empty pool.

Furthermore, pumps are serviced, components are replaced or refitted, and necessary modifications to the operational systems are carried out. At the same time, maintenance is carried out on the measurement and control systems, along with statutory electrical inspections. In stainless-steel pools, overflow channels are cleaned, minor damage is repaired and rust spots – which can be caused, for example, by lost hair clips – are removed.

In addition, work is carried out that cannot be performed during regular swimming pool opening hours for safety reasons. Among other things, the glass roof above the 50-metre hall at the Stadtbad is cleaned during this period.

Another reason for the indoor swimming pools’ summer closures is staffing: maintenance and repairs
are carried out by council staff, who are also responsible for the day-to-day running and upkeep of the outdoor pools. During the summer months, both tasks have to be co-ordinated, often on a daily basis depending on the weather.

Chemnitz’s indoor swimming pools will reopen on different days once the work has been completed. The opening times can be found at www.chemnitz.de/hallenbaeder.
