On Wednesday 24 June at 11.00 am, members of the media are invited to a press event at the main building of the Chemnitz Botanical Garden, Leipziger Straße 147.
A partnership between the Botanical Garden and the energy supplier eins will be presented. With support from eins, the facilities and premises of the School Biology Centre are being gradually refurbished and modernised. Initial progress will be showcased: the Forest Room and the lecture theatre have already been completed. In addition, the current status of planning for the refurbishment work on the main building will be explained.
Dr Sten Gillner, Director of the Chemnitz Botanical Garden; Beate Koch, a teacher at the Chemnitz School Biology Centre; Astrid von Watzdorf, Head of Corporate Communications at eins; and Carmen Schreiter, Corporate Communications Officer at eins, will be available to answer questions from journalists.
Background
The Botanical Garden on Leipziger Straße has been a magnet for numerous visitors of all ages for more than 125 years. Today, it attracts around 60,000 visitors a year. Spanning an area of 12 hectares, this facility run by the City of Chemnitz brings together three distinct areas – the Botanical Garden, the School Biology Centre and the Nature Conservation Centre. Their shared aim is to familiarise the public – and children and young people in particular – with nature in a variety of ways.
The particular strength of the Chemnitz Botanical Garden lies in its combination of scientific education and direct experience of nature. Learning there is not abstract, but sensory and emotional: through observing, discovering and experiencing living nature. Children can experience plants with all their senses, adults gain new perspectives on ecological interrelationships, and many visitors develop a deeper appreciation for the fragility of natural habitats and the importance of preserving our natural heritage.
