Since yesterday, the street banners – which had been displayed on lampposts to promote Chemnitz as the European Capital of Culture 2025 – are now being taken down over the course of July, following the end of the international festival “Theater der Welt”.
The approximately 300 banners were put up just under two years ago, whilst preparations for Chemnitz 2025 – European Capital of Culture were in full swing, along numerous main roads and arterial routes throughout the city, both into and out of the city. These included Leipziger Straße, Schloßteichstraße, Zwickauer Straße, Annaberger Straße, Zschopauer Straße, Dresdner Straße, Neefestraße, as well as the Südring and many others.
The hanging fixtures will be put into storage and will be available to the City of Chemnitz for future events. The banners will also be stored for the time being, although plans for their future use are already being considered. For example, it would be conceivable to turn them into upcycled products as genuine mementoes of an unforgettable 2025. Further ideas are welcome.
The banners are being taken down by staff from the Transport and Civil Engineering Office, the Building Management and Building Construction Department, and the Parks and Green Spaces Office of the City of Chemnitz – the same teams that installed them in 2024.
