From Saturday, 28 March to Thursday, 2 April, Lord Mayor Sven Schulze will be travelling to Da Nang in Vietnam at the head of a delegation from Chemnitz. The aim of the trip is to deepen economic and scientific relations between the two cities and to open up new areas of co-operation. This should open up new perspectives, particularly for companies and research institutions in the field of future-orientated technologies.
Sven Schulze will be accompanied by Silvana Bergk, Head of the Business Department of the City of Chemnitz, Prof Thomas von Unwerth, Vice-Rector of Chemnitz University of Technology, Prof Harald Kuhn, Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Electronic Nano Systems (ENAS), Dr Sebastian Liebold, Advisor to the Chamber of Industry and Commerce, and Katrin Hoffmann, Managing Director of Industrieverein Sachsen 1828 e. V., among others.
In Da Nang, Lord Mayor Sven Schulze meets with Phạm Đức Ấn, Chairman of the People's Committee, comparable to the mayor of the city. Both will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which will form the basis for long-term cooperation between Chemnitz and Da Nang. Also present will be Nguyen Xuan Binh, Director of the Department of International Labour and Head of the Department of Science and Technology, Internal Affairs, Finance, Education and Training.
Discussions are planned on how young skilled workers from Vietnam, both from the training sector and from the university sector, can find an easier entry into Germany and how science and technology companies can cooperate more closely. The aim is to promote the development of key industries such as semiconductors, microelectronics, artificial intelligence, hydrogen technology, sustainable energy systems, mechanical engineering, automation and industrial manufacturing. The opportunities range from exchange programmes for professional development, cooperation between administration and companies and coordination in the organisation of conferences and seminars to the implementation of joint research projects.
In addition, Mayor Sven Schulze and Ho Quang Buu, Vice Chairman of the Da Nang People's Committee, Department of Science and Technology, will open a liaison office of the City of Chemnitz in Da Nang. This office will serve as a contact point for companies, institutions and investors and actively support local economic co-operation. It will be made available to the city of Chemnitz free of charge for three years and will be managed by Da Nang.
The trip will focus on expanding cooperation in the high-tech sector. Among other things, a visit to the Da Nang Semiconductor and Artificial Intelligence Center for Research and Training (DSAC) - a state research and training centre in Vietnam that was founded in 2024 - is planned. The centre focuses on the development of skilled workers, technology transfer and international cooperation. The aim of the talks is to explore opportunities for joint projects and innovation partnerships in the fields of semiconductor technology and artificial intelligence.
Another item on the programme is the exchange with the University of Da Nang on cooperation in research, teaching and the development of skilled workers. With around 50,000 students, the university is one of the largest in central Vietnam and specialises in engineering, technology, business and education. During a visit to the port of Lien Chieu, the delegation also learnt about current and planned investments in the logistics sector.
With this trip, the city of Chemnitz is emphasising its efforts to focus more strongly on international partnerships and to expand its position as an innovative business and science location.
