Special exhibition: Proboscideans
Venue: Tietz, Museum of Natural History, 1st floor
Admission: Admission to the special exhibition on proboscideans is free of charge. A valid admission ticket is required for the tour of the permanent and special exhibitions.
The freely accessible area between the Museum of Natural History and the Neue Sächsische Galerie currently offers an insight into the evolution of proboscideans. During his work in the museum’s collection store, research trainee Christopher Herrmann unexpectedly discovered a large number of proboscidean fossils. This gave rise to the idea of exploring the evolution of elephants using objects from our collection. In the display cases, you can take a closer look at elephants, mammoths and other creatures.

For creative minds aged 10 to 14, max. 10 people. Duration: approx. 1.5 hours
Have you ever taken a closer look at the colours and structures of insects? These little ‘crawlers’ are true masters of camouflage and deception. They can be found in every habitat around the world – you just need to look closely. At the ‘Nature Journaling’ workshop on insects, we’ll be doing just that together with Yvonne Stunkeit, capturing our impressions with pen and paper.

At the Insectarium, we’ll get up close and personal with some of these creatures and discover the different ways insects use to camouflage themselves and fool us.

Those who draw look closely! “Nature Journaling” is all about your own perspective on nature – as you fill your sketchbooks with pictures, words, numbers and natural materials. Try out this creative technique in a workshop with Yvonne Strunkeit!
At the excavation site, you’ll explore which fossils have been discovered in Chemnitz. Or would you like to know what tools are used for this? What the colours of the earth layers reveal about the Petrified Forest? Or how plant impressions are formed? You decide for yourselves – fold and design your own little journal!

A freshly excavated fossil has been stolen. The fossilised bones of the unknown animal, which were only discovered yesterday at the excavation site, have vanished without a trace.
However, a rucksack was left behind at the scene. Decipher the contents of the rucksack! Search for clues on the excavation site! Can you manage to find the lost fossil and unravel its significance?
