City council decides to extend Reinhardtstrasse

Redesign to upgrade residential area

At its meeting today, Chemnitz City Council decided to carry out a major upgrade of Reinhardtstraße between Lessingplatz and Palmstraße. The approximately 255 metre long section of road on Sonnenberg is to be comprehensively renewed and redesigned.

The construction work will be realised together with inetz GmbH and the waste disposal company of the city of Chemnitz. Extensive work is planned on the combined sewer as well as the drinking water, district heating and power lines. As these pipes are located throughout the road, the work will be coordinated with the road construction.

Reinhardtstraße primarily serves to provide access to the neighbouring residential buildings and local amenities in the district. It will remain a residential street with a speed limit of 30 km/h. There is no bus traffic on this street and cyclists will continue to use the carriageway.

A carriageway width of 5.60 metres is planned. A parking lane with perpendicular parking spaces will be created on one side of the road. This will be interrupted at junctions by footpath projections so that pedestrians can cross the road more safely. A continuous green strip will be created on the opposite side. The pavements will be newly built on both sides and will be at least 2.90 metres wide.

In front of the Gotthold-Ephraim-Lessing primary school, a small recreational area with tree planting will also be created. A total of 21 new trees will be planted along the road.

No trees need to be felled for the project.

The redesign will reduce the number of car parking spaces. In future, 44 parking spaces will be available, down from 60 previously. At the same time, however, new green spaces and trees will significantly enhance the street area.

In addition, 19 bicycle racks will be installed along Reinhardtstraße. New markings and adapted signage will also improve orientation in the street.

Construction work is expected to begin in April 2026 and last around 21 months.

In order to minimise restrictions for residents, the work is planned to be carried out in three construction phases. During the construction period, Reinhardtstraße will be closed in sections and traffic will be diverted. A replacement bus stop for the school bus stop at Gotthold-Ephraim-Lessing-Grundschule will be set up in Palmstraße during the construction work.

The total costs for planning and construction amount to around 2.06 million euros. A large part of the funding is being provided by the European Union from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and from urban development funding. In total, around 90 per cent of the costs will be covered by subsidies.

The expansion is the result of several resolutions passed by the city council. The "Sonnenberg-Nord" framework plan from 2014 already envisaged upgrading the connection between Zeisigwald and the city centre. In a later development study on Reinhardtstraße, goals were set for the redesign. These include a higher quality of stay, more greenery and more space for pedestrian traffic.

The project will upgrade another section of the Sonnenberg redevelopment area and improve the quality of life in this neighbourhood.
