Ground-breaking ceremony for new two-court sports hall in Grüna

Invitation for journalists: Monday, 30 March, 9 a.m., Baumgarten-Grundschule, August-Bebel-Straße 7

On Monday, 30 March at 9 a.m., representatives of the media are invited to the symbolic ground-breaking ceremony for the new two-field sports hall on the grounds of Baumgarten Primary School, August-Bebel-Straße 7, in Grüna. Mayor Ralph Burghart will be joined by representatives from politics and administration as well as the Free State of Saxony.

This marks the start of construction for the new sports hall, which will be used by both pupils and sports clubs and will offer space for up to 199 spectators. Modern sports areas are planned for handball, basketball, volleyball and football, among others. The entire complex will be barrier-free. This includes a wheelchair-accessible stair lift to the schoolyard as well as barrier-free sanitary facilities and changing rooms.

The new building incorporates modern and sustainable energy standards: A photovoltaic system will be installed on the roof of the hall, and green roof areas are also planned. Heat is supplied via a pellet heating system. An efficient ventilation system with heat recovery ensures a pleasant indoor climate with low energy consumption.

The background

On 26 November 2025, the city council approved the construction of a new two-court sports hall in the Grüna district of Chemnitz on the site of the Baumgarten primary school (B-163/2025). The construction site will start in mid-April. The shell of the building should be completed by the end of this year, with completion including the outdoor facilities scheduled for March 2028.

The project was based on a concept and location study commissioned by the Sports Office in the third quarter of 2021. This analysed several possible locations, including the sports field on the school grounds and an area behind the school.

At the end of 2022, the location on the existing sports field facing north-south was selected as the best solution. In 2024, it was decided to continue the planning up to the design planning stage and to apply for funding at the same time. At the beginning of March 2025, the agreed and final optimised version was then ready for approval.

The total costs amount to around 9 million euros. The measure will be subsidised to the tune of 4 million euros by funds based on the budget approved by the Saxon state parliament. The City of Chemnitz received the final funding decision at the beginning of June 2025.
