The pilot project, launched last year at the start of the school year at three schools in Chemnitz, which aims to open up school sports facilities – used for school activities during the day and then for recreational sport afterwards – is to be continued this year.
The project has been implementing a corresponding resolution passed by the city council in August 2025. At the selected schools, initial trials have been carried out to assess how the facilities are being used and, in particular, what needs to be taken into account should further areas be opened up.
In addition to the area at Südlicher Sonnenberg Primary School, which was already partially accessible, everyone can now continue to use – initially extended until the end of the year – the ball sports area at Marianne-Brandt Secondary School and the basketball court at Am Hartmannplatz Secondary School – once daily school activities have finished – without having to book in advance (see also press release 524/2025). This also applies at weekends. The opening hours and rules of use have been displayed at the facilities as required.
Mayor Ralph Burghart: “I am delighted that the Schools and Sport Committee supports the further review of the project over the course of a full year. This means schools are becoming an even more vibrant part of the neighbourhoods, even outside school hours. I do hope that everyone will treat the facilities with care, so that normal school life can resume the following day and after the holidays.”
In addition to the school sports grounds, there are numerous play and sports areas throughout the city which, alongside club sports facilities, provide easy access to sporting leisure activities
