Taxi fares to rise from May 2026

At its meeting today, Chemnitz City Council decided to increase taxi fares in the Chemnitz compulsory travel area from 1 May 2026. The fares will be adjusted in two stages - first from May 2026 and then again from January 2027.

The basic fare will initially be increased from the current 4 euros to 4.50 euros. From January 2027, it will rise to 5.20 euros. The kilometre prices will also be adjusted accordingly. In addition, the charges for waiting times will increase slightly. The surcharge for large-capacity taxis (5 passengers or more) will be increased from the current 6 euros to 7 euros and from January 2027 to 7.50 euros.

The adjustment on 1 May 2026 will lead to an average increase in travel costs of around 15 to 16 percent. The second adjustment on 1 January 2027 will be more moderate at around seven percent and is based on the expected further cost development.

This is based on an amendment to the Taxi Fare Ordinance, which is due to come into force on 1 May 2026.

The amendment to the taxi fare ordinance in the Chemnitz compulsory travel area is being made at the request of the Chemnitz eG taxi cooperative (on behalf of all members). Various institutions and associations were consulted prior to the city council's decision, including the Chemnitz Chamber of Industry and Commerce, transport companies, trade unions and the relevant authorities, most of which issued favourable statements.
The background to this is, in particular, the significant increase in the statutory minimum wage. This rose to 13.90 euros on 1 January 2026 and will rise again to 14.60 euros on 1 January 2027. As personnel costs make up a large proportion of operating costs in the taxi industry, these increases have a direct impact on the economic situation of companies.

In addition, general costs have increased in recent years due to inflation and rising operating expenses.

In addition to the adjusted fares, further changes have been decided to improve the service for passengers and modernise the taxi industry: In future, cashless payment by credit or debit card will be possible in every taxi at the request of passengers.

Taxi companies will accept at least three credit cards commonly used in business transactions. This will ensure that passengers have a standardised and reliable payment option regardless of the taxi company.

In addition, fixed-fare journeys must in future be recorded in the taximeter at the start of the journey - either manually or automatically via radio data transmission. Fixed-price journeys have been possible in Chemnitz since October 2024. The new regulation ensures greater transparency and reduces input errors.
