Background:

Since the 1980s, the Chemnitz trombone choirs have played from the High Tower every Saturday from Easter to the fourth Advent. Stefan Weber († 2015), Chemnitz's long-serving tower keeper, was instrumental in maintaining this tradition.

Originally, however, it dates back to the 15th century. At that time, it was the task of the tower keepers to play musical pieces from the High Tower, which is part of the Old Town Hall and St Jakobi's Church.

This tradition experienced various ups and downs over the centuries, including interruptions due to wars and fires. From 1932, the tradition was revived by a district trombone choir, which still exists today. After the Second World War, the tower was partially rebuilt and the tower blowing could continue.

This year, brass players from 17 parishes are playing on the High Tower and cultivating this 500-year-old tradition. The performances are organised by the Saxon Trombone Mission.
