Last week, 15 orange-eyed tree frog juveniles were admitted to the vivarium at Chemnitz Zoo. The young frogs were distributed to selected breeders in close cooperation between Zurich Zoo, Karlsruhe Zoological Garden and the Citizen Conservation network/collaborative project to support the establishment of a stable conservation breeding network.

In 2024, tadpoles and a clutch of frogs, including orange-eyed tree frogs, were confiscated during a customs inspection at Zurich Airport and initially housed at Zurich Zoo. Over the past few months, a great success was achieved there: the adult frogs spawned successfully for the first time. This was the beginning of the establishment of a reserve population of this endangered species. This was the start of an important species conservation project in which Chemnitz Zoo is also involved.

The orange-eyed tree frog (Agalychnis annae) is a characteristic amphibian species of Central America. With its green body, blue flanks and orange-coloured eyes, it is representative of the dramatic developments in amphibian conservation. Back in the 1980s, the species suffered massive population declines, triggered by the so-called chytrid fungus, which destroyed entire populations in large parts of Central America. Today, only a few highly endangered remnant populations remain.

In view of this situation, the establishment of a reserve population is of central importance. The aim is to secure the species in the long term and, in the long term, to enable reintroduction measures.
