Located in the middle of the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region and the central European economic area, the state capital of North Rhine-Westphalia is one of the most important economic, transport and cultural centres in Germany.

The trade fair city is home to a large number of listed companies, has the highest turnover of any German advertising and fashion location and is an important banking and stock exchange centre. Düsseldorf Airport is the intercontinental hub of North Rhine-Westphalia. The city on the Rhine has two inland harbours and is home to four universities, including the renowned Academy of Fine Arts and Heinrich Heine University. Düsseldorf has a long tradition as a city of art.

In the 1980s, the cityscape was permanently changed by several urban development projects, such as the construction of the new state parliament building, the development of the media harbour and the construction of the Rhine bank tunnel. The tunnel enabled Düsseldorf's old town to be brought back to the Rhine in 1993 in the form of the Rhine embankment promenade. In the 1990s, a new office, business and leisure district developed in the Media Harbour.

Chemnitz and Düsseldorf maintain a wide range of contacts at all levels of both city administrations. The continuous and regular support from Düsseldorf, especially in the area of information and personnel exchange, was a great help in establishing the Chemnitz city administration after 1990. The award of honorary citizenship to the former Lord Mayor of Düsseldorf, Mr Klaus Bungert, was an expression of the City of Chemnitz's gratitude for the support provided by the City of Düsseldorf.

Clubs, companies and associations also maintain good and regular relations with the twin city.

Visit from Düsseldorf - 30 citizens of the twin city visit Chemnitz

2019 marked the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. To mark the occasion, the twin cities of Chemnitz and Düsseldorf launched a special project.

30 Düsseldorfers who had never been to Chemnitz before visited Chemnitz from 8 to 10 November. There they also met the 30 people from Chemnitz who will be paying a return visit to the state capital of North Rhine-Westphalia next year.

The Düsseldorfers expressed their gratitude for the warm welcome and the many good conversations and impressions that they will now take back home with them - including an original piece from the Berlin Wall.
