Ústí nad Labem lies between the Ore Mountains and the Bohemian Uplands in the picturesque Elbe Valley, at the confluence of the Elbe and Bilina rivers.

It is the centre of the North Bohemian industrial and conurbation area, a transport hub and the seat of the Ústí nad Labem district. The Elbe harbour is also important for inland shipping. The industrial city is characterised by heavy industry, the chemical and food industries and an electricity plant with heat generation in the west of the city. The high levels of air and water pollution are decreasing more and more. The Czech government's environmental regulations are now more stringent than those in Germany.

Usti nad Labem is home to the Jan Evangelist Purkyne University and, thanks to its rich past as a free royal city, has numerous cultural and historical sights. The city's surroundings with numerous castles (e.g. the ruins of Střekov Castle dominating the Elbe Valley), bridges and natural sights are always worth a visit. A successful theatre tradition and a rich cultural life form the basis for the annual cultural festivals.

Ústí nad Labem is located just 120 kilometres south-east of Chemnitz. The geographical proximity favours the many-faceted friendly relationship, for example between the transport companies, the municipal theatres, the hospitals, but also in the joint work on EU projects or in the exchange of children and young people and numerous sporting encounters. The Větruše Castle, which has been reconstructed by the city since 2001, has already hosted several exhibitions by Chemnitz artists.
