City by the river
Stadt am Fluss is an infrastructure project that was given high priority at the workshop on the intervention areas with Chemnitz citizens in November 2018. The aim was to revitalise the riverside areas along the Chemnitz and its tributaries and make them accessible as public (cultural) spaces. Today, the completed areas invite you to rediscover the city - in the middle of nature, in the centre of Chemnitz.
On the Chemnitz river
The four projects along the Chemnitz, the river that gives the city its name, are redesigning the urban space and bringing the river to life in a variety of ways. From the former river baths to the imposing viaduct to the Nordpark and Helgoland, attractive places are being created that bring nature more into the city and put the Chemnitz in the spotlight. These new meeting places create space for recreation and exercise and harmoniously connect the city and nature.

For a long time, the site of the former Altendorf goods station between Beyerstrasse and Rudolf-Krahl-Strasse was characterised by wasteland, wild vegetation and a heavily built-up, ecologically disadvantaged natural area. The withdrawal of the railway opened up the opportunity to create a new part of the city here - with publicly accessible open spaces, areas for housing, community use and commerce as well as integrated flood protection.

The opening of the "Am Feldschlößchen" play and rest area marked the completion of another sub-project of Stadt am Fluss. A new area for playing, relaxing and socialising was created between Kappelbach and the footpath and cycle path - directly opposite the tram museum and the garage campus. This has revitalised a long unused space.
