City Centre Ring Road: New construction phases at Falkeplatz and on Mühlenstraße

Following extensive preparatory work for the construction of the new bridge and the track triangle, the first phase of bridge construction at Falkeplatz will begin on 17 July 2026. To date, the construction track has been laid parallel to the existing tram tracks and has also been made accessible to motor vehicle traffic. In addition, a pedestrian bridge and a utility bridge have been installed over the River Chemnitz, and numerous utility lines have been relocated. This means the way is now clear to demolish the ageing bridge and replace it with a new structure. Alongside the construction of the new bridge, initial work is also underway on the new track junction towards Theaterstraße.

Changes to car traffic
Traffic in both directions on Zwickauer Straße will be channelled via the newly constructed temporary track. We would ask you to take extra care around tram traffic (expected to start from 10 August 2026). Traffic on Theaterstraße will be channelled in both directions via a temporary carriageway at the former Rosenhof bus stop. It is still not possible to turn left from Zwickauer Straße into Theaterstraße. In addition, the turning lane from Theaterstraße to the right into Zwickauer Straße is now also closed. The diversion runs in both directions via the Kaßberg access road. To allow for the completion of overhead line works, Zwickauer Straße will be fully closed in the city centre direction on the nights from 21 to 31 July 2026, from 9.00 pm to 5.00 am each night. The diversion is via Reichsstraße.

Changes for pedestrians and cyclists
It is no longer possible to cross Zwickauer Straße near the Deutsche Bank; instead, a new pedestrian and cycle crossing will be established across Bahnhofstraße in this area. Once the temporary bridge over the River Chemnitz is completed, cycle and pedestrian traffic will be diverted across it. Until then, the route via the existing bridge will remain in use.

Tram and bus services
Services on tram lines 1 and 4 are expected to resume from 10 August 2026, following completion of the overhead line works. Until then, the current replacement service for bus routes 31, E31 and 23 will remain in place. Thereafter, buses 31 and 23 will once again run directly via Zwickauer Straße. The relocation of the Rosenhof bus stop will remain in place.

On 21 July 2026, work on Mühlenstraße between Brückenstraße and Stadtbad will be completed and the road will be reopened to traffic. In addition to numerous utility line replacements, the carriageways and pavements along Mühlenstraße have been resurfaced, and areas have been created for urban greening and tree planting. Preparations have also been made for the new tram route along Theaterstraße and Brückenstraße. This involves the traction power supply and overhead line systems.

Work is now moving on to Theaterstraße Nord between Brückenstraße and Hartmannstraße. Alongside the reorganisation of all underground utility lines, the first sections of the tram track around Chemnitz city centre are being laid. Roadways and pavements are also being completely renewed.

Once work on Mühlenstraße is complete, the section of Theaterstraße Nord between Brückenstraße and Hartmannstraße will be fully closed from 21 July 2026. Traffic will be diverted in both directions via a wide detour via Müllerstraße and Schloßteichstraße. Traffic between Brückenstraße and Mühlenstraße will then be possible again in both directions. Access to the Roter Turm underground car park and the Rathaus Passagen multi-storey car park will remain available from Hartmannstraße and from the direction of the Kaßbergauffahrt. Under certain circumstances, it may be necessary at times to make a U-turn via the junction at the Wall when approaching from Hartmannstraße. Delivery access to the Brückenstraße cul-de-sac will remain as before within the one-way system, with access via the Janssenbrücke.
