The supra-regional centre for high-quality care of complex and severe lung diseases is now being expanded to include a third site. From now on, the three partners will pool their expertise. The aim is to offer patients in Central Germany a local service that reflects the latest scientific standards in all areas. This will ensure access to personalised, high-quality diagnosis and treatment for lung diseases throughout the region. The Central German Lung Centre enables rapid and barrier-free access to all diagnostic and therapeutic options offered by modern pulmonary medicine and lung surgery.
Lung cancer screening: hospitals pool their expertise
Through their collaboration with the Heinrich Braun Hospital in Zwickau, the hospitals in Zwickau and Chemnitz are launching a lung cancer screening programme for early detection. For people at increased risk of lung cancer, this screening is covered by statutory health insurance. The aim of the screening is to detect lung cancer as early as possible – at a stage when it is often still easily treatable or curable. The service is aimed at smokers and former smokers who do not yet have any symptoms of lung cancer. The first point of contact for the screening is your GP or a specialist in private practice – particularly those specialising in internal medicine, respiratory medicine and occupational medicine. There, eligibility criteria are assessed, the required information on the benefits and risks of the screening is provided, and a referral for the examination is issued to radiologists. In future, the radiology teams at the Chemnitz Polyclinic and the Chemnitz Radiology Group Practice will carry out the NDCT examinations and the initial assessment. In the event of unclear, abnormal or borderline findings, radiologists at Chemnitz University Hospital will carry out the second assessment for the South-West Saxony Health Region. The Chemnitz Lung Cancer Centre is integrated into the subsequent diagnostic and clinical pathway: its experts provide interdisciplinary advice on how to proceed in the event of abnormal findings.
