Time and again, families find themselves in emergency and crisis situations and children can no longer live in their own family.

In these cases, the child is placed in a suitable foster family for a specific or indefinite period of time. Foster mothers and fathers for children aged 0 to 14 are urgently needed.

In Chemnitz, there are currently 289 foster children living in 238 foster families (as of March 2024). There are currently around ten children waiting for a suitable foster family. In addition, there are children who live in residential groups but would be better off in a foster family - if one existed. In addition to the Foster Children's Service at the Youth Welfare Office of the City of Chemnitz, the Caritas Association for Chemnitz and the surrounding area is also entrusted with the search for and placement of foster mothers and fathers. It advises interested parties on the subject of foster children and also looks after the circle of active foster parents.

Types of fostering:

  • Full-time care for children whose parents are unable to look after and bring up their children themselves for a longer period of time or permanently,
  • Short-term care for children whose parents are unable to care for their child for a limited period of time (e.g. due to illness).

For foster children, we are looking for families who:

  • Are willing and able to take in affected children,
  • can offer children warmth and security,
  • have parenting experience,
  • are resilient and tolerant.

We offer professional preparation, counselling, support and material services. The next information event at the youth welfare office will take place on 3 February 2025, from 4 to 6 pm in Moritzhof, room 272.

Caritasverband für Chemnitz und Umgebung e. V. is also responsible for finding and supporting foster families in Chemnitz and regularly organises information evenings.
