Once again this year, the City of Chemnitz, the Federal Government and the Free State of Saxony are funding democracy projects. As in 2025, civil society organisations were once again able to submit project proposals.
A total of 56,500 euros was allocated from local authority funds for the implementation of the Local Action Plan for Democracy, Tolerance and a Cosmopolitan Chemnitz (LAP). Of this, 53,730 euros were approved. This enables grants of up to 5,000 euros per project to be funded.
The federal programme “Demokratie Leben!” is funded by federal funds, co-financing from the Free State of Saxony and local authority funds. For projects in Chemnitz, an action fund totalling 78,960 euros is available in 2026. Of this, 76,848 euros were approved. The maximum grant per project was 20,000 euros.
A total of 49 project applications were submitted. Of these, 20 projects fell under the ‘Demokratie Leben!’ federal programme and 29 under the LAP. Following processing and assessment by the specialist unit, all applications were discussed by the monitoring committee. Those projects that received a funding recommendation were informed immediately, and the grant procedure was initiated by the specialist unit.
Under the LAP, the City of Chemnitz is funding 14 projects this year, whilst four projects can expect to receive funding under the federal programme. In line with the call for proposals, the focus is also on the implementation of initiatives for young people. Measures in public spaces are also well represented. This is based on the identified needs and the approach that children and young people in Chemnitz’s neighbourhoods require alternative options to delinquent behaviour, as well as stable opportunities for relationships and activities. Greater democratic resilience and appropriate non-violent conflict resolution strategies are pillars of peaceful coexistence within the city of Chemnitz.

There have been some changes to the monitoring committee. New members include ASA FF e.V., ASB Chemnitz und Umgebung e.V. and AGIUA e.V. The Bürgerverein FUER Chemnitz e.V., Inpeos e.V. and RAA Sachsen e.V. have voluntarily stepped down after two years.
