Bridge construction for premium cycle path on Kalkstraße begins
Work begins on 1 July with the construction of earth walls
On Monday 1 July, construction work will begin on the bridge for the Wüstenbrand-Chemnitz premium cycle path on Kalkstraße. The bridge is required to allow the cycle path to cross Kalkstraße without levelling out. This fulfils an important criterion of the funding conditions for the premium cycle path. Completion is planned by the end of October 2025.
The bridge, which is around 185 metres long, is being built using an integral construction method. In order to connect the structure to the existing cycle paths, earth embankments will first be built on both sides of the structure. Retaining walls will form the connection between the embankments and the bridge structure. The structure is founded on micro bored piles.
In addition to the multi-curved shape, the carriageway has another special feature: it is made of carbon concrete slabs. This allows a weight saving to be achieved, which minimises the amount of steel used for the main girders.
The superstructure of the bridge structure is a girder grid made of airtight steel boxes. The supports are made of steel tubes. The carriageway made of carbon concrete slabs is finished with mastic asphalt. The bridge is a total of 183.5 metres long in the carriageway axis and 4.5 metres wide between the railings. The bridge area is approx. 825 square metres. The main girders have a construction height of 0.7 to 1.7 metres.
Several full road closures of Kalkstraße will be necessary for the delivery and assembly of the bridge sections. The timeline depends on the production and delivery of the steel parts and carbon concrete slabs. The closures for deliveries will take place on weekdays from 10 pm to 4 am. Kalkstraße will then be closed on a weekend from 10 p.m. on Friday to 4 a.m. on Monday for the assembly of the bridge. The exact dates will be agreed with all parties involved at least five weeks in advance. Information will then be provided in good time.
The construction costs amount to just under 7.8 million euros. Around 90 per cent of the eligible construction costs are being funded by the Free State of Saxony.
The company Hentschke Bau GmbH from Bautzen was commissioned with the construction work.
