City council adopts new bylaws on parking spaces for vehicles and bicycles

At its meeting today, Chemnitz City Council passed new bylaws that regulate the number of parking spaces required for vehicles and bicycles as well as their design. Among other things, it stipulates how many parking spaces must be provided for which types of buildings that generate traffic. These buildings include, for example, residential buildings, office buildings, sales, assembly or sports facilities, churches, schools and daycare centres, hospitals and commercial facilities. Parking spaces can be created in the open air, in carports, garages or underground car parks.

On the one hand, the new statutes are an update from the year 2000, primarily to take account of current mobility requirements. One of the new features is the section relating to the design of car parking spaces. The aim is to make better use of space potential in order to improve the residential, working and living environment as well as the quality of stay through more greenery in the city. At the same time, limited surface sealing serves to reduce the heat load in the urban area (heat prevention).

In addition to the number of parking spaces required and the design using certain types of trees, the bylaws also regulate, among other things, the reasonable distances and the amount of redemption fees that - depending on the defined zone - are to be paid instead of creating the necessary parking spaces and garages.
The bylaws enter into force on the day following their publication in the official gazette and are subsequently published at www.chemnitz.de/satzungen.
