At its meeting today, Chemnitz City Council approved the Chemnitz Music School’s development plan up to 2032. This plan forms the technical basis for further amendments to the fee regulations governing lessons, the hire of instruments, and new charges for concerts, events and workshops. The changes will come into force on 1 August 2026, at the start of the 2026/2027 academic year.
The new fee regulations for lessons further develop the existing incentive scheme with the so-called ‘new active tariff’, encouraging active participation in ensemble work and entry into competitions. Compared with one-to-one lessons under the old fee regulations, the fee for one-to-one lessons under the ‘active tariff’ will rise by five per cent; the same applies to combined and group lessons. For one-to-one lessons without further involvement in music school life, a 15 per cent increase is planned.
The fees for borrowing instruments are also being adjusted. Costs will rise by 25 per cent for music school pupils and external users. At the same time, the new fee regulations once again allow instruments to be hired for a period of more than three years. In doing so, the City of Chemnitz is taking into account the fact that many pupils use instruments over a longer period. At the same time, incentives to eventually purchase their own instrument are to be maintained.
In addition, the City Council has adopted a new fee schedule for concerts, events and workshops. Admission prices for the music school’s ticketed concerts will increase by 1 euro each, depending on the event and visitor group.
Despite these adjustments, numerous concessions remain in place. These include, amongst others, social concessions, family concessions, discounts for people with disabilities, as well as support for rarely played instruments and the preparatory department for higher education. A discount of 50 cent continues to apply to tickets purchased in advance at the Municipal Music School.
With these approved adjustments, the City of Chemnitz is responding to increased staff and operating costs. At the same time, musical education is to remain accessible to children, young people and adults.
