At its meeting today, the City Council approved the comprehensive redevelopment of Zwickauer Straße between Schillstraße and Am Feldschlösschen. The decision is subject to the condition that, in addition to urban development funding, the EU funding applied for is also granted.
The approximately 440-metre-long section of road in the Kappel district will be comprehensively renewed. At the same time, drinking water, gas and electricity lines will be modernised in collaboration with inetz GmbH. In the area of the tram museum, a narrow-gauge museum track will be constructed over a length of around 130 metres and integrated into the carriageway.
The upgrade will bring Zwickauer Straße into line with current requirements. Plans include cycle lanes on both sides, new pavements and parking bays, complemented by new tree planting areas and safe crossing points. A total of 36 new street trees will be planted. To make way for these, some of the existing parking spaces will be removed. The new design will improve conditions for pedestrians, cyclists and motorised traffic alike.
In addition, new crossing aids for pedestrians are being installed. Not far from the garage campus, a pedestrian traffic light will be installed to make it easier to cross the road safely. On Schillstraße, a waiting area for cyclists turning left will also be created.
As part of the construction project, Steinstraße and Tieckstraße will also be repaired. Once the utility companies have completed their pipework, the road surface there will be resurfaced. The works form part of the coordinated overall project and will help to minimise the maintenance costs for the road surfaces.
Construction work is scheduled to begin in August 2026 and is expected to last around 20 months. To minimise the impact on local residents and traffic as much as possible, the project will be divided into five construction phases. During the construction period, Zwickauer Straße will be closed in sections. It will remain open to traffic heading out of town as a one-way street, whilst traffic heading into town will be diverted.
The total cost of the project amounts to around 4.03 million euros. Around 85 per cent of the costs are to be covered by grants from the federal government, the Free State of Saxony and the European Union. Funding is to be provided from the Urban Development Fund and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) as part of the Sustainable Integrated Urban Development (NiSE) programme.
