At its meeting today, Chemnitz City Council resolved to make additional funds and commitment appropriations available in order to implement the first projects from the Saxony Fund. These resolutions are directly linked to the decisions already taken on 27 May 2026 regarding the selection of projects from the Saxony Fund. They create the budgetary conditions necessary for planning and the first steps towards important investments in the areas of education, transport, culture, sport and public safety to begin.
With the adjustments to the 2026 budget now confirmed, the City of Chemnitz is ensuring that funding from the Free State of Saxony can be utilised and that the necessary local contributions can be secured. At the same time, commitment appropriations are being made available for the years 2027 and 2028 so that multi-year projects can be prepared and commissioned in a legally sound manner.
In the transport sector, funds are being channelled into the construction of the new bridge at Falkeplatz as part of Phase 4 of the Chemnitz Model. €2.1 million will be allocated to the project in 2026. Furthermore, the City of Chemnitz is securing funding for the coming years in order to meet existing contractual obligations.
Funding is available for the preliminary planning of the Südring bridge over Annaberger Straße. This will lay the groundwork for the project to be submitted to the Free State of Saxony for implementation in the future.
Further funds are earmarked for the refurbishment of roads and footpaths. This is intended to enable preparations for, and the commencement of, urgently needed work on the transport infrastructure. In addition, planning for civil engineering structures in poor structural condition will continue, so that future construction projects can be prepared in a targeted manner.
Initial funding is also being made available for the city centre. Plans include a concept for a controllable access control system designed to enhance safety, particularly during events. At the same time, the city centre is to remain open and accessible to everyone.
In the cultural sector, the City of Chemnitz is providing funding for a final study. The aim of this study is to clarify whether and to what extent it is possible to house an opera house and a spoken theatre with separate stages at a single site, or to identify which other alternatives are technically and financially feasible.
The measures also include the refurbishment of the roof of the competition hall at the Ice Sports and Leisure Centre. An additional €1 million will be made available in 2026 to the wholly-owned municipal subsidiary for the planning work. This will lay the foundations for a subsequent refurbishment by EFC GmbH Chemnitz, whilst also taking into account heritage protection requirements.
C³ Chemnitzer Veranstaltungszentren GmbH will also receive 1 million euros for initial planning and urgently needed work on the roof of Exhibition Hall 1. The work is to be carried out in phases to minimise disruption to event operations.
Part of the required own funds can be made available because the fire safety measures at the Josephinenschule will begin later than originally planned, meaning less money will be needed in 2026.
The City of Chemnitz points out that the allocation of funds is directly linked to the grant applications submitted to the Sachsenfonds.
