Yesterday’s Girls’ Brunch at the Spinnerei in Chemnitz set a new attendance record with 235 participants.
In a relaxed atmosphere, girls and young women from all over the city enjoyed brunch together, chatted and laughed. They were able to discover a wide range of activities and try out new things to their heart’s content. Whether it was jewellery-making, screen printing, yoga, a hip-hop dance workshop, the smoothie bike, the mobile music rehearsal room or the pool area – everywhere, people got involved, gave things a go and spent time together. The Girls’ Brunch also offered plenty of opportunities to make new friends, discover their own interests and enjoy a carefree day out.
Alongside the creative and sporting activities, this year’s programme also featured an important topic: in the workshop on cyberbullying and cybergrooming, the participants explored the challenges of digital spaces. They learnt how to recognise problematic situations, what options for action are available and where those affected can find support. In this way, knowledge was imparted, media literacy was strengthened and self-confidence in using social media, messaging services and other online platforms was fostered.
The Girls’ Brunch is organised annually by the Chemnitz Working Group on Girls and Young Women in collaboration with the City of Chemnitz’s Equal Opportunities Officer. The enthusiastic response and the new attendance record demonstrate how important it is to provide spaces that offer girls and young women a safe environment. There, they can exchange ideas, make new friends, explore their interests and discuss issues that matter to them. In this way, the Girls’ Brunch makes an important contribution to gender equality in Chemnitz: it helps girls and young women develop their sense of self, encourages their participation and creates space for interaction, co-determination and mutual support.
