On Saturday 20 June, Road Safety Day will be held across the country. The Traffic Enforcement Department of the City of Chemnitz is using this campaign day as an opportunity to step up checks on both stationary and moving traffic.
As well as penalising traffic offences, the focus will be primarily on a preventative approach. Officers will make a greater effort to engage with road users, provide information on existing regulations and promote considerate behaviour on the roads.
The main focus of checks on stationary traffic will be on keeping pavements, cycle paths and cycle lanes, pedestrian crossings and kerb ramps clear, as well as at junctions and road junctions, fire brigade access routes, and ensuring that emergency access routes and disabled parking spaces are kept clear.
Checks on moving traffic will take place at the following locations:

The measures aim to improve road safety through a sustainable preventive effect. In particular, they are designed to prevent road accidents, minimise the consequences of accidents and protect particularly vulnerable road users.
The checks also support the so-called ‘Vision Zero’. This is the nationwide guiding principle of a transport policy aimed at ensuring that, in the long term, there are no more fatalities or serious injuries on the roads. Consistent and sustainable traffic monitoring is a key component of this.
Speed checks serve primarily to improve road safety. They are designed to encourage road users to adhere to the legal speed limits and thereby help reduce the risk of accidents.
Background
The campaign day, initiated by the German Road Safety Council (DVR) in 2005, takes place annually on the third Saturday in June – with the aim of raising awareness of road safety through information and education initiatives, checks and various hands-on activities.
