Hydrogen Alliance Chemnitz Region - Results Report 2025

Central basis created for the path of hydrogen into industry

The Chemnitz Region Hydrogen Alliance has published its results report for 2025 and its target plan for 2026. In the second year of the alliance, the partners - the City of Chemnitz, Chemnitz Chamber of Industry and Commerce, eins energie in sachsen GmbH & Co KG, inetz GmbH and HZwo e.V. - have laid important foundations for the development of a regional hydrogen economy. The focus was on preparing central infrastructure and innovation projects that will enable hydrogen to be utilised in the region in the future.

The most important results for 2025 at a glance:

  • Hydrogen Innovation Centre (HIC):
An outstanding milestone was the approval of the funding decision totalling 84.4 million euros by the federal and state governments. This will significantly advance the establishment of the Hydrogen Innovation Center (HIC) as the national location of the federal government's innovation and technology centre.
  • Progress in infrastructure:
The JTF-funded projects of eins energie and inetz have been significantly advanced. These include the planning of an electrolyser at the hydrogen campus, the development of a local distribution network and the preparation of the connection to the hydrogen core network.
  • Hydrogen demand analysis:
With the completion and presentation of the in-depth needs analysis, the industrial hydrogen requirements in south-west Saxony have been concretised.
  • International visibility:
With the H2GP World Finals in August 2025, Chemnitz hosted an international world championship for hydrogen-powered model vehicles. Around 600 pupils and students from various countries took part and gained insights into the regional research and business landscape.

Challenges and outlook for 2026

Despite these successes, the alliance also faces challenges. In particular, unclear energy policy framework conditions and delayed decisions by the federal government on the national grid infrastructure make it difficult for companies to make reliable investment decisions.

Nevertheless, the region believes it is well positioned for 2026. The core objectives for the coming year include continuing to represent political interests, supporting key infrastructure projects and supporting the industrial transformation. In addition, the INTERREG project "ReH₂gion", which focuses on the development of a cross-border hydrogen network with the Czech region of Ústí nad Labem, will be launched.
