Contact support
What is contact?
A child has the right to contact with both parents, i.e. to see and speak to them at regular intervals. In addition to face-to-face meetings, contact by telephone, e-mail and letter also counts as contact. Conversely, parents are also entitled to contact with their child (right of access). Contact serves to maintain the parent-child relationship, which should be preserved and promoted even after the parents have separated.
The parents are free to organise the type and extent of contact and decide on this together for the benefit of their child. According to Section 18 (3) SGB VIII, both children and young people as well as parents are entitled to receive counselling and support from the youth welfare office when exercising contact rights. In the event of a dispute, the competent family court can regulate the scope and organisation of contact rights and, if necessary, oblige parents to have contact in the best interests of the child.
What is contact counselling?
Sometimes both parents are so estranged after the separation that handing over the child for contact is not conflict-free. In such cases, a contact counsellor from the Youth Welfare Office helps to implement the existing contact arrangements.
Tasks:
- Handing over the child from one parent to the other or
- Accompanying the handover at a (neutral) agreed location
- Observing and accompanying the contact between the child and the parent with access rights
- Reporting to the youth welfare office, general social services, on the basis of an agreement
