Am Stadtgut pedestrian bridge to be demolished

Next step in the renaturalisation of the Pleißenbach green corridor

From the beginning of February, the Am Stadtgut pedestrian bridge over the Pleißenbach will be demolished in order to build a new bridge structure there.

In order to widen the watercourse at the narrow section of the Am Stadtgut bridge, it will have to make way for a new replacement structure with a longer span. Due to the condition rating of 3.9, corresponding renovation or repair measures would have been necessary anyway. Extensive earthworks will also be carried out to improve flood protection. The Pleißenbach will be given a new riverbed. The area where the parish car park is currently located will be removed and remodelled. The car park next to the parish building will then be rebuilt.

During the bridge construction work, it will therefore not be possible to cross the Pleißenbach in this area between the beginning of February and the end of July this year.

Pedestrians and cyclists are asked to use the viaduct in the park at Kochstraße or Rudolf-Krahl-Straße. A corresponding diversion will be set up. The planned completion date is 30 July of this year, so that pedestrians and cyclists will be able to cross the bridge again at the same point after technical acceptance.

The demolition and new construction of the bridge is part of construction phase 2.1, with which another part of the park on the Pleißenbach is being realised. Since the beginning of November 2025, dismantling and demolition work has been underway in the area between the already completed construction phase 3 and the BS-Uni-Bau site.

The planning services including construction supervision for the entire facility are being provided by the planning office Station C23 Architekten und Landschaftsarchitekten PartG mbB (Leipzig). Stowasserplan GmbH & Co KG (Radebeul) is carrying out the watercourse planning and construction supervision. IGS Ingenieure GmbH & Co KG (Weimar) is responsible for planning the new bridge replacement. Other project participants are also involved, such as fisheries, waste management and ecological construction supervision. Phönix-Bau GmbH & Co KG (Aue-Bad Schlema) was awarded the contract for the construction work following an EU-wide tender and award procedure. Phönix-Bau's range of services includes, in particular, engineering, civil engineering and hydraulic engineering work.

The total construction costs amount to 1.25 million euros. The measure is being subsidised in part by the waterways/flood protection directive with a funding rate of 90 percent and in other parts with two-thirds urban development funding (see also press release 842).

Background
The overall project "Pleißenbachgrünzug" is being realised as part of "Stadt am Fluss" as an important intervention area of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025. The site of the former Altendorf goods station between Beyerstrasse and Rudolf-Krahl-Strasse was long characterised by fallow land, succession and an ecologically disadvantaged, heavily built-up natural space. Following the withdrawal of the railway, the opportunity arose to create a new part of the city with open spaces for public use as well as additional areas for housing, community use and commerce - including flood protection. The project is divided into nine construction phases, six of which have already been completed. In the meantime, around 900 metres of near-natural stream sections, a new foot and cycle bridge and an attractive park with a large playground have been created. The Küchwald-Wüstenbrand premium cycle path also runs through the green corridor, most of which has been completed in this area and construction is currently continuing on the Röhrsdorfer Straße - Riedstraße section. This cycle path, which is independent of other traffic and largely free of crossings, has created and will continue to create a safe and attractive centre-west connection for cyclists.

A total of around 12.9 million euros has already been invested in the development of the Pleißenbach greenway.
