Owners of horses, cattle, pigs, sheep, goats, poultry, fish and bees are legally obliged to register and pay contributions to the Saxon Animal Disease Fund. In addition, livestock must be reported to the competent veterinary office.

American foulbrood of bees was officially detected in Chemnitz. A restricted area was established in accordance with the Bee Disease Ordinance. This includes areas in the districts of Euba, Adelsberg and Kleinolbersdorf-Altenhain.

Beekeeping is a very demanding leisure activity that requires a high degree of responsibility and knowledge about bees. The beekeeper is obliged to keep the bees in such a way that bee diseases can be recognised at an early stage and infection of other bee colonies can be ruled out.

African swine fever
African swine fever (ASF) is a notifiable animal disease that can affect domestic and wild pigs. Transmission occurs through direct contact with infected animals, the ingestion of food waste or pork products and through indirect transmission routes.
Newcastle disease in pigeons kept in the urban area
On 14 January 2021, Newcastle disease (ND) was officially detected in a pigeon flock in the Markersdorf district. The virus is highly contagious and can infect many other bird species (e.g. chickens, quails, geese, wild birds) in addition to pigeons.
