A varied programme for different target groups is planned for the day: In the morning, schoolchildren and daycare centre children will have the opportunity to take part in various workshops and language animations.
In the afternoon, the programme will be expanded to include cultural, economic and historical aspects of the Weimar Triangle and is aimed at students and anyone interested in Europe in general and the Weimar Triangle in particular.

EUROCITIES mayors' conference in Leipzig
EUROCITIES mayors' conference in Leipzig
More than 50 mayors from across Europe jointly sign "Declaration on Local Democracy"
On Tuesday, 8 April, Lord Mayor Sven Schulze took part in the Eurocities European Conference of Mayors, which was held this year in the Kongresshalle Leipzig. Under the motto "Upgrading Local Democracy!", more than 50 mayors from all over Europe came together to discuss how to strengthen local democracy in plenary debates, discussions and workshops.
One of the highlights of the conference was the ceremonial signing of the "Declaration on Local Democracy", which was also signed by Lord Mayor Sven Schulze. In it, the mayors of the member cities pledged to strengthen European democracy in cooperation with national governments and the European institutions through participation and involvement and to take a firm stand against forces that harm it. At the same time, they emphasise that European democracy begins at the local level and call on the EU institutions to strengthen the role of cities by involving them in political processes.
In addition to the Mayor of Leipzig and Eurocities President Burkhard Jung and Eurocities Secretary General André Sobczak, Hanna Zdanowska, Mayor of Łódź, and Juhana Vartiainen, Mayor of Helsinki, were also present.
Eurocities is a network of major European cities. It was founded in 1986 and brings together the local governments of more than 200 major cities in 38 European countries. The City of Chemnitz has been actively involved in Eurocities since 2002.
Simulation of the European Parliament (SimEP) in Chemnitz
Promotion of European work
On 17 and 24 March 2025, pupils in years 10 to 12 had the unique opportunity to take on the role of MEPs in the European Parliament - right in Chemnitz Town Hall! The Simulation European Parliament (SIMEP) offered a hands-on simulation game in which the young people stepped into the shoes of real politicians and re-enacted a legislative process of the European Parliament. SIMEP was launched in 1999 by the Young European Movement (JEB) and has been an annual highlight for many young people ever since. The simulation has also been organised in Saxony since 2016 and took place in Chemnitz for the first time this year.
At this event, participants not only learnt about the institutions of the EU, but also gained an insight into the work of politicians - all in an entertaining and interactive way.
Under professional guidance, the students experienced a day full of political discussions, negotiations and decision-making. They slipped into the roles of MPs and were divided into five parliamentary groups. The programme included two parliamentary group meetings, a committee meeting and a plenary debate - all with a final vote. In this simulated environment, the young people were able to experience real political processes at first hand, negotiate compromises and put their argumentation skills to the test.
Parallel to the event, a workshop for teachers was also offered, which provided valuable insights into the organisation and implementation of political education projects.
SIMEP is not only an exciting challenge, but also a valuable learning experience. Here pupils can:
- Solve real European problems in a safe environment.
- Have fun learning more about the EU.
- Take on different political roles and develop personally.
SimEP is a cooperative event organised by the SLpB in cooperation with the Young European Federalists of Saxony, Europe Direct Dresden and the State Ministry of Justice and is supported by the City of Chemnitz.

PEACES - An Exploration of Plural Peace Across Borders
Transnational exhibition from 6 to 18 March at Weltecho
The exhibition understands peace as a plural concept and a multi-layered experience and explores above all its artistic, but also scientific and social dimensions. This unique event, which opened on 6 March 2025 at Weltecho Chemnitz, is organised by the City of Chemnitz and supported by GO!2025 European Capital of Culture Nova Gorica - Gorizia and the European university alliance ACROSS and commemorates the Day of Peace and Remembrance with a collaborative, interdisciplinary exhibition.
With contributions from ACROSS students and young artists from Nova Gorica, Udine, Banja Luka, Chemnitz and beyond, the exhibition includes contemporary art installations, videos, photographs, live performances and a cinema programme of short films and animations that question perceptions of hospitality, migration and resilience while reflecting on peace as a priority that transcends people and borders.
In addition to a guided tour of the artworks, the opening event will feature two performances, a film screening and an international panel discussion, offering different perspectives on peacebuilding in a fragmented world. Through the confluence of creative expression and cultural exchange, Peaces invites the audience to reflect on the complexity of peace as a universal endeavour and deeply personal imperative.
Organised by the City of Chemnitz, with the support of the University of Nova Gorica School of Arts (Erasmus+), GO!2025 European Capital of Culture Nova Gorica - Gorizia.
