On Urban Development Day on 10 May, interested parties can explore the Garage Campus and the urban economy on guided tours.

For strong neighbourhoods, an attractive living environment and a good life in the neighbourhood, urban development funding is one of the most important instruments of urban development. The federal government, the federal states and local authorities work together to ensure that homes - in small and large cities - remain beautiful and liveable.

On 10 May, events will once again be held throughout Germany under the motto "Vibrant places, strong communities" to show what urban development funding can achieve. On this day, the City of Chemnitz's Urban Planning and Property Office will be providing information about exciting European Capital of Culture projects that would not exist without urban development funding.

Background

The Day of Urban Development has been celebrated nationwide since 2015 in order to strengthen citizen participation in urban development and make the successes of urban development funding visible.

What activities are taking place?

Garage Campus

From the Kappel depot to the intervention area of the Capital of Culture - the garage campus presents itself in its new guise. Extensive remodelling of the former administration building, extensive roof renovation including the entire roof truss, new skylights and much more have led to the successful conversion of the former CVAG depot on Zwickauer Straße. The garage campus is already available this year for specialist conferences and many public events.

The ongoing permanent exhibition "#3000Garagen" and planned projects with schools, universities and training companies are part of the sustainable concept for the development of a cultural and meeting location. In addition, the Garage Campus still offers plenty of undiscovered potential and space for creative ideas.

With exciting and informative guided tours of the campus area, the Garage Campus team invites you to explore the site in the morning.

The 45-minute tours start on 10 May at 10 am and 11 am.
The meeting point is the entrance at Zwickauer Straße 164.

The Chemnitz city economy

With the revitalisation of the "Stadtwirtschaft" industrial estate on the Sonnenberg - consisting of several buildings and extensive outdoor facilities - this area will be converted into a meeting place for creative people as an intervention space as part of the Capital of Culture. This year, 25 associations and initiatives are already planning to hold programmes and events in the Stadtwirtschaft. For example, the "#3000Garagen" project is currently rehearsing a theatre play there and an exhibition of light installations by Düsseldorf artist Mischa Kuball will also begin at the start of May.

Around ten permanent leases have already been signed with new creative users. The outdoor areas will be designed as communal spaces.
The Stadtwirtschaft made a convincing first impression during a guided tour for guests of the European Capital of Culture and with an illumination on the evening of the opening ceremony in January.

The Urban Planning and Property Office will be giving a guided tour of the buildings and courtyards of the new Maker Hub on the Day of Urban Development. The one-hour tour starts on 10 May at 3 pm in front of the building at Jakobstraße 46.
