European Energy Award

Chemnitz is an eea Gold municipality

On 28 November 2023, Chemnitz was awarded the European Energy Award (eea) in gold for the 3rd time with 78.2 percent. The award recognises the successful climate protection policy of the city administration, municipal companies, network partners and Agenda21 stakeholders. "Despite receiving the award once again, the city must continue to intensify its efforts to protect the climate," said Ms Carina Kühnel, Head of the City of Chemnitz's Environment Department.
The city administration's goal is to become climate-neutral by 2040 at the latest (City Council resolution: B-156/2022). Important areas in which the city's climate protection efforts must be further intensified include
- Expansion of renewable energies, sector coupling, H2 strategy, also as a location factor for industry and commerce
- Conversion of generation plants and grid expansion at eins
- Expansion of the eins product range, e.g. tenant electricity
- Climate-neutral administration by 2035
- Comprehensive circular economy
- Utilisation of regional resources
- Significant increase in pedestrian and cycle paths
- Greenhouse gas-free drives for commercial vehicles (CVAG, ASR)
What is the European Energy Award?
The eea is the Europe-wide quality management system and certification procedure used to record and evaluate the energy and climate protection activities of the municipality in a structured manner. The eea serves to save energy, utilise energy efficiently and increase the use of renewable energies. In addition to increasing energy and cost efficiency, participation in the programme provides meaningful key figures and sound documentation of municipal activities.
Ongoing support from an eea consultant and annual inspections by an accredited auditor ensure that the City of Chemnitz consistently pursues and achieves the desired goals.
