Around 10,000 dogs currently live in Chemnitz. To ensure harmonious coexistence, a few basic rules should be observed when walking dogs.</p

The following simple rules contribute to a pleasant and conflict-free coexistence between dogs, their owners and other people. If you follow them, you will not only ensure a more relaxed coexistence, but also contribute to a more dog-friendly world - for happy dogs and happy people.

A dog, regardless of size, should be supervised responsibly and only by people who are physically able to hold the dog safely, keep it under control at all times and handle it in such a way that neither people nor other animals are endangered. Wearing a muzzle in areas with large gatherings of people contributes significantly to the safety of everyone involved. In Chemnitz, dogs must always be kept on a lead in the city centre. Designated off-leash areas as well as suitable natural areas such as field margins, heathland, wasteland and fallow land, agricultural land or forest areas - provided that no deviating regulations apply there - offer opportunities for controlled off-leash running.

Playgrounds and sports facilities

Dogs should not be taken to playgrounds, football pitches and sports facilities. Children and sports enthusiasts should be able to play there safely and undisturbed. The only exception is for specially trained and certified assistance dogs in accordance with the Disability Equality Act.</p

Hygiene and risk of infection

Pollution of public spaces is a particularly important issue. Pet owners are obliged to remove their animals' droppings immediately, especially in parks, on pavements or in green spaces. A suitable tool should always be carried for this purpose, which must be presented to the municipal enforcement services or the police on request. Disposal takes place via residual waste bins or suitable waste containers.

Dog faeces are an ideal breeding ground for worms and bacteria. Infection with the larvae of the dog tapeworm can cause severe liver and lung disease in humans. Children in particular are at risk of becoming infected with these pathogens in contaminated playgrounds.</p

Violations can be expensive

If you violate the regulations on keeping animals, you not only risk displeasure in the neighbourhood, but also fines. The city of Chemnitz would like to point out that further regulations apply in addition to the city's police regulations.</p

These include Section 28 of the Road Traffic Act, which stipulates the duty to supervise animals and the prohibition on taking animals out of motor vehicles to ensure road safety. § Section 121 of the Administrative Offences Act regulates the unauthorised keeping of dangerous, wild or vicious animals and punishes this with a fine.
