Removal of winter damage underway

Since the beginning of March, winter damage on the roads in Chemnitz's road network has been being repaired again. The first priority is to repair damage that poses an acute threat to road safety, as well as damage to the main road network.

Working together to protect the orange-eyed tree frog

Last week, 15 juvenile orange-eyed tree frogs were admitted to the zoo's vivarium. They were distributed to selected breeders in collaboration with other zoos and the Citizen Conservation network/community project in order to establish a stable conservation breeding network.

Melanchtonstraße: ESC renews sewerage system

From 7 April, the waste disposal company of the City of Chemnitz (ESC) will be renewing the sewer system on Melanchthonstraße. As part of the construction work, there will be a full closure for vehicle traffic until 29 May; pedestrians will be diverted past the construction site.

Street trees are planted

Until mid-May, a total of more than 330 new street trees will be planted, mainly in the south-west of Chemnitz. The trees will be replanted in existing but empty tree locations. The aim is to enhance street spaces and improve the quality of life in the city.

International Stefan Heym Prize of the City of Chemnitz


Festive award ceremony on 18 April

The poet, writer, essayist and translator Juri Andruchowytsch will receive the International Stefan Heym Prize of the City of Chemnitz 2026. The award ceremony by Lord Mayor Sven Schulze will take place on 18 April 2026, traditionally on the occasion of Stefan Heym's birthday (10 April 1913) and this year at the event location 'die fabrik', Zwickauer Straße 145.

Sponsorship prizes worth 20,000 euros on offer

Pupils, individuals and school classes who are interested in history, literature or politics in the spirit of Stefan Heym and would like to address social issues are invited to submit projects by 15 September.

The International Stefan Heym Society and its co-operation partners offer readings, lectures, panel discussions and discussions with contemporary witnesses on the life and work of Stefan Heym as well as regular guided tours of the Stefan Heym Forum Chemnitz and the city.

About the person: Stefan Heym

The International Stefan Heym Prize of the City of Chemnitz is awarded in memory of the life, work and achievements of Stefan Heym, the son and honorary citizen of the city. Since 2001, the city of Chemnitz has honoured an internationally respected personality who was born and grew up here. With his extensive life's work, Heym is one of the most important German writers of the 20th century.
