Child protection guideline - Action orientation Acute endangerment

Acute danger - action orientation

Acute danger means taking immediate, concrete action.

This form of risk to a child's welfare exists when immediate action is required to ensure the physical integrity of the child or to prevent serious or permanent physical injury or death.

There are indications of an acute risk to the child's welfare, e.g:

  • No food/liquid,
  • lack of vital medical care,
  • no or unsuitable guardians (e.g. custodians in an acute phase of addiction and/or mental illness),
  • suicide announcement,
  • dramatic living conditions (e.g. heavily soiled and littered home),
  • Child asks for help, no longer wants to go home,
  • (repeated) injuries (e.g. fractures, burns, scalds) with an unclear or incomprehensible cause.

The legal guardians are unwilling or unable (lack of acceptance of the problem or unwillingness) to avert the acute danger or accept help.

Call the emergency services on 112 or the police on 110 and report to the youth welfare office (transfer of case responsibility)!

In case of acute danger and immediate need for action, a personal telephone call between the reporter and the specialist of the General Social Service (ASD) or specialist of the Social Pedagogical Child Protection Service (KSD) is mandatory.

The report form must be sent in writing by fax or e-mail to the Social Pedagogical Child Protection Service (KSD). A high-quality report with as much concrete information as possible about the given indications and steps already taken facilitates further processing in the ASD/KSD, especially if the involvement of the family court becomes necessary.

What should the person making the report note down?

  • Name of the specialist at the youth welfare office or employee of the police or emergency services,
  • Time, date,
  • Instructions given by the specialist at the youth welfare office or the police or emergency services.

Child protection guide

To provide guidance on what to do if there are indications that a child's welfare is at risk, the Early Intervention Network, together with its various partners and the Chemnitz Youth Welfare Office, has developed a Child Protection Guide. It is primarily aimed at professionals from youth welfare organisations and people who are entrusted with the care of minors in a professional context.
