Lessingplatz

Play areas opened at Lessingplatz

Lessingplatz is part of the urban development framework plan for southern Sonnenberg. The listed square from the Wilhelminian era has been extensively redesigned and now presents itself as a lively meeting place.

After intensive public participation, a variety of play and sports facilities for jumping, climbing and balancing were created. New seating and two table tennis tables invite people to exercise and socialise. Freshly planted trees and newly designed flowerbeds surround the square with greenery. The square is characterised by two central axes and four quarters. The wooden walkways have been renewed and contribute to the quality of the space.

Lessingplatz is a green oasis in the middle of the Sonnenberg district of Chemnitz, which was characterised by the Gründerzeit. The historic site was created at the beginning of the 20th century as a recreational area. Walking paths, seating and small play areas invited people to linger, then as now.

The square, which is a listed building, is characterised by its star-shaped layout: seven streets converge here, giving Lessingplatz its striking appearance. The square is also dominated by two central axes that divide it into four neighbourhoods.

Today, Lessingplatz is a popular meeting place for local residents, a place to relax and a green haven of peace in the centre of the city.
