On 14 April 2025, Mayor Michael Stötzer and the Grüna local council ceremoniously handed over the leisure area on Bergstraße to the citizens of Chemnitz.

The open space was selected for the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 as an intervention area for the village of Grüna in order to open it up to new uses. In addition to the "Grüna erleben" (Experience Grüna) circular trail on the history of the village, a multifunctional square has been created with a stage, recreational areas for all age groups and a pond terrace that can be reached via a footbridge. A new place to meet, socialise, experience and enjoy.

A new pump track and play equipment have been integrated into an additional area. A footpath and cycle path connects all the places in the leisure area.

The existing public green spaces on Bergstrasse have been upgraded and supplemented, taking nature conservation into account. The intervention area will be integrated into the surroundings with a variety of tree, shrub and herbaceous plantings. The leisure area will also provide a rest stop for the future premium cycle path on the old Wüstenbrand - Küchwald railway line.

325,000 euros from the Capital of Culture budget were available for the design of the public square. The planning services were provided by Jacob+Bilz Landschaftsarchitekten PartnerschaftsG mbH. The construction work was carried out by Baumschule Hohenstein-Ernstthal Garten-und Landschaftsbau GmbH.

Cultural capital hiking trail "Experience Grüna"

The first hiking boards and signs, including a large panorama board with lots of historical and architectural information about Grüna's buildings, have already been installed along the newly created "Grüna erleben" (Experience Grüna) cultural capital hiking trail, which is around 9 kilometres long. The Heimatverein Grüna e. V. and the Natur- und Wanderverein Grüna e. V. were the co-initiators here.

Further hiking boards along the circular route will be installed in the coming weeks.

The hiking trail can already be found in the city map under "Leisure" > "Hiking trails" > "Experience Grüna":

On 6 September 2024, the new pump track facility was set up in the Bergstrasse leisure area. The modules, which had previously been delivered by lorry, were assembled on the prepared site by the contracted company Baumschule Hohenstein-Ernstthal GmbH and supervised and instructed by an assembly manager from the manufacturer.

Work on the new leisure centre on Bergstraße in Chemnitz-Grüna began at the end of June. A public square is being created there, taking nature conservation into account - a place to meet, exchange ideas, experience and enjoy. A leisure area with a variety of recreational areas, including a square with a stage and a footpath with a pond terrace, will invite all age groups to linger. The new pump track for children and young people aged 4 to 14 will be integrated into an additional square area alongside another piece of play equipment.

The construction costs total around 375,000 euros, including municipal funds for tree planting. The work is being carried out by the company Baumschule Hohenstein-Ernstthal GmbH. Construction supervision is being carried out by the planning office Jacob + Bilz Landschaftsarchitekten PartnerschaftsG mbB, Chemnitz.

In addition to a new nine-kilometre circular hiking trail on the history of the village, Grüna has decided to redesign the public green space with a football pitch on Bergstrasse. The area on Bergstrasse is to be sensitively upgraded and supplemented with structural functions. According to the wishes of the residents and Grüna clubs, a place to meet, socialise, experience and enjoy will be created here.

In future, there will be small recreational areas and meeting points for all age groups along Bergstrasse. A plateau in the centre of the site will create new perspectives and opportunities. The new pump track increases the courage and joy of movement of 4 to 14-year-olds. A variety of plants and associated paths gently integrate this place into the sensitive environment. Nature conservation requirements and regulations play a key role in the development of this site. The area on the mountain road will also provide a rest stop for the future premium cycle path on the old Wüstenbrand - Küchwald railway line.
