Around 2.9 million euros for independent culture in Chemnitz
The artists, cultural associations and initiatives active in Chemnitz are key supporters of cultural life. A lively independent cultural scene made up of associations, project groups and artists plays a key role in shaping the intellectual and cultural climate in our city.
In addition to operating municipal cultural institutions, the City of Chemnitz ensures that independent cultural organisations and actors are provided with appropriate financial support for their range of activities and events.
According to the SächsKRG, the decision on the allocation of funds in the urban cultural areas is made by the municipal bodies. For municipal facilities, the city council decides within the framework of the respective budget statutes. In the City of Chemnitz, the Culture Committee decides on the granting of subsidies and grants from municipal art and culture funding to individual artists, cultural associations and initiatives in accordance with Section 13 (3) (5) of the main statutes. The Cultural Committee is advised by the Cultural Advisory Board, to which the City Council has appointed selected cultural experts, in accordance with Section 5 (2) SächsKRG.
94 Support measures for a diverse cultural landscape
At its meeting on 31 January 2019, the Culture Committee approved the institutional and project-related cultural funding for 2019. The funding totalling 2.9 million euros will go to 94 institutions, associations and projects in the fields of museum work, performing arts, music, visual and applied arts, film/media, literature, socio-culture, local history, youth culture and individual projects. Thanks to additional cultural area funds totalling 500,000 euros, the funding budget was significantly increased compared to the previous year.
