Chemnitz is also known all over the world thanks to its many famous athletes. Katarina Witt, Michael Ballack, Matthias Steiner, Gabi Seifert, Jan Hoffmann as well as Aljona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy (figure skating), shot putter David Storl, discus athlete Lars Riedel, swimmer Stev Theloke and track cyclists Stefan Bötticher, Joachim Eilers, Max Niederlag as well as Michael Hübner and Jens Fiedler, gymnasts Pauline Schäfer and Sophie Scheder, gymnast Andreas Bretschneider and track and field athletes Kristin Gierisch and Max Heß are examples of the many excellent athletes who have won titles and medals in international arenas.
Since medal counting began in 1963, athletes from our city have won 686 medals at Olympic Games, World and European Championships.
Chemnitz is more rich in Olympic traditions than almost any other city in Germany. Athletes from Chemnitz have won 27 gold, 33 silver and 31 bronze medals at the Olympic Games.
In addition to an obligatory tradition, competitive sport in Chemnitz also has a solid basis in grassroots sport. Chemnitz's sports clubs have more than 34,690 members, including 11,270 children and young people. The people of Chemnitz can pursue their sporting ambitions in 221 sports clubs and currently choose from 86 different sports. The variety of sports on offer ranges from American football to water polo.
The NINERS Chemnitz men's basketball team has been playing in the German Basketball League since 2020 and celebrated the first title win in the club's history by winning the FIBA Europe Cup 2024.
The "Floor Fighters" men's team also plays successfully in the 1st Bundesliga and won the German Cup in 2024.
The women's water polo players from "Schwimmclub Chemnitz von 1892" are represented in the 1st Bundesliga, as are the weightlifters from the "Chemnitzer Athletenclub".
Chemnitzer FC (CFC), Die CHEMCATS Chemnitz, Boxclub 94 Chemnitz e. V., the ice hockey players of the "Chemnitz Crashers" and the women's team of Handballverein Chemnitz e. V. also provide great team sport in their respective leagues.
Niners Chemnitz win FIBA European Cup
Thousands of Chemnitz residents welcome Niners to the market
Thousands of Chemnitz residents celebrated the Niners Chemnitz on the market square on Sunday, 28 April 2024. After arriving on the team bus at Neumarkt, they were welcomed by Lord Mayor Sven Schulze and Minister President Michael Kretschmer in the town hall. There, the players, coaches, club management and support team signed the Golden Book of the City of Chemnitz.
Meanwhile, thousands of fans celebrated the team on the market square, which then presented itself with the European Cup on the town hall balcony and was cheered frenetically. Finally, the players came to the market to take photos with the fans and fulfil autograph requests.

Honours in the Golden Book of Sport
Max Heß honoured for silver medal at European Indoor Championships
On 4 April, Max Heß signed the City of Chemnitz's Golden Book of Sport in the presence of Lord Mayor Sven Schulze. Max Heß from LAC Erdgas Chemnitz won a silver medal in the triple jump at the European Indoor Championships in Apeldoorn, the Netherlands, at the beginning of March. The 17.43 metres he jumped meant a season's best for him and was also the best result of a German triple jumper at a European Indoor Championships. Max Heß was only beaten by the Italian Andy Diaz Hernandez, who won the competition with a distance of 17.71 metres.

Luge athlete Timon Grancagnolo received at the town hall

Timon Grancagnolo signed the City of Chemnitz's Golden Book of Sport on 15 July 2024 in the presence of Sports Mayor Dagmar Ruscheinsky.
The luger became U23 world champion in 2023 and successfully defended this title a year later. Timon Grancagnolo, born in 2003, has been a member of ESV Lokomotive Chemnitz e. V. since 2007 and already achieved success in various age groups as a child and teenager. His first international highlight was winning the overall World Cup in the A-Youth category in 2017/18. At the Youth Olympic Games in St. Moritz in 2020, he took third place in the individual competition and finished second with the team. This was followed by German championship titles, World Cup victories and top placings at the European and World Championships in the respective age groups.
Bowler Frank Grunert enters his name in the Book of Sport

Frank Grunert signed the City of Chemnitz's Golden Book of Sport on 15 July 2024 in the presence of Sports Mayor Dagmar Ruscheinsky.
The bowler, who has been an honorary member of ESV Lok Chemnitz since 2003, became German champion for the first time in 2010 and won the title again in 2018 and 2019. In May 2024, the 58-year-old became European champion in the individual category and European runner-up in the combined category at the European Para-Bowling Championships for blind and visually impaired people.
Floor Fighters welcomed after cup win

Lord Mayor Sven Schulze welcomed the Floor Fighters Chemnitz on 21 May 2024 in the Green Salon of Chemnitz City Hall. There, the team, including the mascot Willy, were allowed to sign the Golden Book of Sport of the City of Chemnitz. Afterwards, the team was celebrated by several hundred fans on Neumarkt square.
The Floor Fighters Chemnitz team won the Floorball Germany Cup on 12 May, the first title in the club's history.
Top-class sport as a guest in Chemnitz
Chemnitz repeatedly proves to be an enthusiastic and professional host for sporting events.
