Urban development funding

What is Urban Development Day?
For more than 30 years, urban development funding from the federal and state governments, combined with many investments by the city and private commitment, has made an indispensable contribution to urban development. To date, around 377 million euros in grants from various programmes have been invested in redevelopment areas in the Gründerzeit, the city centre, districts in the Heckert area and the revitalisation of brownfield sites. Neighbourhood management teams are active on site with citizens on behalf of the urban planning office, redevelopment agencies and agencies advise building owners or new investors, encourage cooperative housing projects and support small businesses in the neighbourhood.
The Day of Urban Development Promotion has been celebrated nationwide since 2015 in order to strengthen citizen participation in urban development and make the successes of urban development promotion visible. Ideas, projects and stakeholders in all urban development programme municipalities provide a forum for presentation and show residents and interested parties what can and has been made possible with urban development funding.

moreExamples of urban development funding in Chemnitz

Most people in Chemnitz remember the situation in our city at the time of reunification 30 years ago. Inner-city residential areas such as Brühl or Kaßberg, built more than 100 years ago for workers or the middle classes, were now grey and dreary. The reunification offered opportunities for renewal. The city council decided on comprehensive urban redevelopment measures in the Gründerzeit neighbourhoods. The then Office for Urban Renewal was founded. Urban renewal funding areas were defined, which participated in various funding programmes.
The city very quickly and imaginatively tapped into the new opportunities to initiate the redevelopment of entire urban areas with grants from the federal government, the state and the EU, and always with a considerable share from its own budget. In 30 years of urban renewal with urban development funding, the city has invested 400 million euros from nine programmes in a total of 16 development areas.
