Opened in 1964, the zoo, which began as a home animal park and has also included the Oberrabenstein wildlife park since 1995, offers interesting insights into the lives of around 1,300 animals of almost 250 species throughout the year on an area of around 10 hectares.

Chemnitz Zoo is a refuge for many rare and endangered animal species from all over the world. It is involved in various species conservation projects and participates in over 25 international breeding programmes for the preservation of endangered species.

Many other zoological rarities and impressive animals, such as the Somali wild ass, Prince Alfred deer, mountain zebra, anoa and rare cat species also live in the zoo. Other attractions include tigers and leopards, spotted hyenas, the marmoset house, djeladas, pink flamingos and the South America enclosure.

In the unique tropical house, the entire free-flight hall is available to the bird species living there. Depending on their habits, they populate the different layers and plant types. The tropical house is also home to pygmy hippos, meerkats, sloths, monkeys, reptiles, fish and leaf-cutter ants.

The farm with petting zoo is particularly popular with younger visitors. Direct contact with domestic animals is possible there.
