Regional Convention
Regional Convention resumes work
On Wednesday, the regional convention met in Chemnitz town hall and thus resumed the work of this committee. The meeting is the first since Lord Mayor Sven Schulze took office.

The regional convention is a format organised by the Lord Mayor of the City of Chemnitz and the district councillors of the Erzgebirgskreis, Mittelsachsen, Vogtland and Zwickau districts. Further cooperation in the areas of economic development, transport infrastructure and tourism were agreed as priority topics for the coming years. They also want to tackle the challenges of structural change in the region together.
The regional convention is committed to the continuation of the MEDiC medical training programme in Chemnitz. The Lord Mayors and District Councillors want to lobby the Free State of Saxony for permanent funding for this very important training programme for the region.
The working meetings are to take place every six months, with the host region changing every year, starting with Chemnitz until the end of 2022.
Lord Mayor Sven Schulze: "The meeting was the kick-off for us to cultivate our relationships with district administrators in the region more strongly again and to act together as a region. There are many common goals and topics. For me, making good policy for our city also means involving the region in a strong regional network. We have impressively demonstrated what this can achieve in the application process for the European Capital of Culture 2025, but also in our joint advocacy for teacher training in Chemnitz. With this first regional convention in two years, we are building on this cooperation."

The original idea behind the convention, which was launched in 2009, was to jointly present the region, which is a living and working environment for almost 1.6 million people. The aim is to bundle strengths, utilise potential and formulate common goals vis-à-vis the federal and state governments. One of the main objectives is to keep people in the region in the long term or to attract them to the region.
In the past, the committee has campaigned for better long-distance railway connections in the region, the establishment of teacher training and for Chemnitz to apply for the title of European Capital of Culture 2025 together with the cultural region.
