Cooperative forms of housing - these are families who renovate an old building together; this is the tenant community that concludes an extension agreement with the owner or the barrier-free multi-generational housing project. The "Kooperative Wohnformen Chemnitz" project offers all interested parties a point of contact.

Since 2018, the city planning office of Chemnitz has been working together with an experienced provider of housing projects from Leipzig, the service combine MIR (Menschen, Ideen, Räume), in the "Kooperative Wohnformen Chemnitz" project. The team is interdisciplinary in the fields of architecture, urban and neighbourhood development and process support. As part of "Cooperative forms of living in Chemnitz", interested parties are to be informed and given comprehensive advice on communal living projects with the aim of forming building or user communities, acquiring and renovating vacant living space. This provides impetus for the revitalisation of vacant properties and the renovation of old buildings in Chemnitz. These housing projects radiate into the neighbourhood and contribute to sustainable neighbourhood development.

The first step is often the "open consultation". The content is based on the questions that interested parties bring with them, e.g. "How do I find fellow campaigners?", "What legal forms are there?" and "How is it all financed?".

The open consultation takes place at different locations and currently also as an online meeting.

If there is a firm initiative that has a specific company in mind, step 2 follows - counselling and support during the start-up phase. This involves examining financial concepts, moderating central decisions, organisational development and construction expertise. Consultancy appointments are arranged with the group.

The events organised by "Kooperative Wohnformen Chemnitz" offer an overview of very different aspects of housing projects such as "Multi-generational housing projects", "Refurbishment, financing and personal contribution" or "Taking over the house as a tenant community".

There are already good examples. At "Alte Cäcilie eG", it was unclear what would happen to their building. The tenants of a house in Hilbersdorf got together. They founded a cooperative themselves at the beginning of 2020 and bought the building together.

The "Kompott" housing project on Leipziger Strasse, which received urban development funding for the refurbishment of the buildings, is also being realised. The tenants are now also the owners.

"Die Strassbürger" realised their residential project at Brühl 71 in cooperation with GGG mbH at the end of 2021. In addition to the refurbishment with urban development funding, the association also provided its own services within the flats.

A residential project is also planned for Hauboldstraße 4, which will initially be secured with urban development funding. "Kooperative Wohnformen Chemnitz" will support the integration of the old building and its future users into a neighbourhood concept.
