Commemorating the bombing of the city 80 years ago

Today, 5 March, hundreds of people from Chemnitz commemorated the bombing and destruction of Chemnitz on 5 March 1945 at numerous events and actions.
The evening's main event on Neumarkt was entitled "Frieden stiften durch Versöhnung" (Building peace through reconciliation) and was organised by the AG Friedenstag. Dean John Witcombe (Dean of Coventry Cathedral), Alexander Dierks (President of the Saxon State Parliament) and Dr Peter Seifert (Lord Mayor of Chemnitz from 1993 to 2006) expressed their thoughts on the topic. The musical programme was provided by the band GoNG. The name GoNG stands for Gorizia/Nova Gorica - two cities for which the national border between them no longer plays a role and which, alongside Chemnitz, are European Capitals of Culture this year.
Lord Mayor Sven Schulze: "Reconciliation means reaching out a hand - across borders, between former enemies, between generations, between cultures and religions. It means overcoming hatred and prejudice, opening up to dialogue, recognising the value of others. It also means taking responsibility and actively working towards a society in which respect and dignity for all people have top priority."
"Peace - a European idea" - Panel discussion
Where bombs fell 80 years ago, reconciliation through Europe was discussed on Peace Day at 4.30 pm. Over 80 guests were invited to follow the discussion "Peace - a European idea" in the Chemnitz City Council Chamber.

- John Witcombe, Dean of Coventry Parish, who will award the Cross of Nails to the St Jakobi-Kreuz parish that evening
- Tina Weinhold-Leiser, Head of International Project Management at F+U Chemnitz gGmbH

Review of the Chemnitz Peace Day 2024
On 5 March 2024, several hundred Chemnitz residents commemorated the bombing and destruction of Chemnitz on 5 March 1945 at events and campaigns entitled "Peace for the city - a city for peace" and remembered the victims of wars all over the world.
Lord Mayor Sven Schulze opened the Peace Day with the traditional commemorative event at the municipal cemetery, where wreaths were laid at the memorial for the victims of the bombing of the city of Chemnitz and contemporary witnesses recounted their childhood memories of the night of the bombing on 5 March 1945.
The main event from 6 p.m. on the Neumarkt, entitled "Menschenkinder" (Children of Men) and organised by the Peace Day working group, was a joint vigil for the fact that wars and conflicts at all times only bring suffering and grief to mankind. Children from the municipal music school appealed for peace around the world in an entertaining programme.
Chemnitz state parliament members Susanne Schaper, Hanka Kliese, Alexander Dierks and Volkmar Zschocke, city councillor Jens Kieselstein and Lord Mayor Sven Schulze recited words by children's book author Astrid Lindgren, also focussing on children at war.
