January to March
The one-year countdown to the opening of the Capital of Culture year began on 18 January, the Stefan Heym Sponsorship Awards and the Chemnitz Peace Prize were presented and the ice sports centre was renamed in memory of Jutta Müller.

The Niners Chemnitz celebrated a historic triumph by winning the European Cup, Łódź and Chemnitz celebrated 50 years of town twinning, the 10th International Festival Tanz|Moderne|Tanz delighted visitors with dance performances and the Gegenwarten art project invited people to take part in discussions.

The "Fritz-Heckert" residential area celebrated its 50th birthday, the modern indoor swimming pool in Bernsdorf was officially opened, the Chemnitz railway arch was completed after four years of construction and the newly elected city council began its term of office.

A sculpture was unveiled on the Brühl in memory of honorary citizen Justin Sonder, Chemnitz City Hall celebrated its 50th birthday, Konkordiapark was given a colourful basketball court and a new record was set for participants in the city cycling event.
